Lingerie FAQs
What is a bustier?
This lingerie item is designed to enhance the bust. It does so by tightening
against the midriff. It only reaches down to the lower ribs or occasionally
the waist. Today, these styles are often selected for use with low-back
dress designs.
What role does boning play in corsetry?
From era to era, this frame-providing element to a corset has played
different roles. Because the item is used for cinching and shaping it
puts a lot of demand upon the fabric from which it is made. The boning
works to maintain the shape and prevent wrinkling. At certain times,
the goal was to create a single conelike shape of the torso. At other
times, the emphasis was placed upon creating a curvier silhouette.
What is a waspie?
This is another term used for a waist cincher. As the name suggests,
it is worn around the waist to make it smaller. It may be used to actually
squeeze that area of the body, or it may be used with flowing clothing
to accentuate the smaller size. More recent styles developed in the
1980s operated more as belts than the earlier mini-corset designs.
